New Season of Life

Unexpectedly,  we have found ourselves wrapped around 10 new toddler toes  at our house.  Just when we thought we were done bringing babies home God surprised us. And, here we are fostering a little guy and loving on him the best we can during this season.

This means helping him catch up on some developmental milestones he is severely behind on.  For this reason I am stepping away from photography for awhile to give him my full attention.

The goal with foster care is reunification so I don’t know how long this season will last.  I may be back for family fall pictures …or not.  Living in uncertainty for now.  It’s frustrating at times but thankfully it sure is cute!!

Now the cruelest rule is I can’t show off his picture ;(  but believe me they are covering the fridge!  🙂

Twin Girls in Tulsa | Newborn Photography

Twin Newborn Photography in Tulsa with two year old big sister

As a newborn photographer occasionally I get to see double!  These two twin sisters were introduced to me by their big two year old sister Ruth.  She was so excited to show them off.  And thankfully she loved holding them.  In fact, she could barely contain her emotions.  She made all the cute faces that will be a treasure to remember for years to come!

Millie and Olive are adorable twin sisters who slept beautifully through their session and really liked to cuddle!  This lead to some really fun pictures of the two of them side by side.  Much like many adventures they will have ahead in their lives I’m sure.  Twin Newborn Photographer in Tulsa by Julie Dawkins Photography Twin Newborn Photographer in Tulsa by Julie Dawkins Photography Twin Newborn Photographer in Tulsa by Julie Dawkins Photography Twin Newborn Photographer in Tulsa by Julie Dawkins Photography Twin Newborn Photographer in Tulsa by Julie Dawkins Photography Twin Newborn Photographer in Tulsa by Julie Dawkins Photography

When each of them decided the needed a little snack I was able to capture each of them separately.  As much as twins are together they are still their own little persons with their own stories and they need to have a few individual pictures captured of their beginnings.

Newborn Baby Boy

Newborn Baby Pictures Tulsa Area Newborn Studio by Julie Dawkins Photography

Hi friends!  Happy Friday!  So glad you found your way over to this my blog.  It’s here on the newborn photography blog that I get to feature some of the cutest little babies in Tulsa.  This sweet newborn boy has the sweetest baby rolls and features.  This family likes the classic look which is a perfect way to make sure that the the images will be timeless and last his lifetime.

One way to keep a session timeless and classic is to eliminate props and keep the colors neutral.  For a boy’s session I like to use various tones of gray, browns, and blues.  My number one rule is that the background should fade away and the portraits should focus on your newborn baby.  If you have to search to find the baby in the photograph then the image is more about the photographer’s art than the baby itself.  In 20 to 60 years I want your baby’s first portrait to perfectly reflect their beginning and all of their features not the props surrounding your baby.

Simple. Sweet. and Cozy!  Below you will find a small portion of  Theo’s session.  We also capture pictures with his Mom and Dad and his sisters too!  Most sessions typically take 2-3 hours in a laid back atmosphere in the studio.  I like to capture family pictures first so if the “big” sibling needs to go play or Daddy needs to head back to work they can go about their day while Mom gets some rest time on the comfy couch while watching the remainder of the session take place.

If you are interested in availability I am currently booking for the fall of 2019.  Email me at JulieDawkinsPhotography@gmail.com!

How to Photograph Your Baby

How to Photograph your baby during the first week by Julie Dawkins Photography Studio Tulsa

So you had a baby.  Everything is new and overwhelming.  You are exhausted and a crying mess… well at least I was with my first.  Pumping and feeding was hard.  We (my baby and I) were not making much progress in that area and to top it off my baby was orange.  The “really” good tan kind of orange that came with home health nurses and double photo therapy lights.

I was a hot mess.  But, I was also the photographer.   And I knew she was changing and growing faster than I was healing.  I was going to have to figure out something to capture her those first few weeks if we were going to have anything to document her beginning.  Now, for two big reasons I 100% think you should hire this whole photography thing out!  1. Bending over and lifting hurts after birth and sometimes you have bend like a pretzel to get the angle on the image you are after.  2. If you still haven’t opened the box to your big camera this isn’t the time to learn…instead learn to be Mommy.  There actually is a learning curve to motherhood.  And lastly, 3. If you haven’t held many babies since your last babysitting gig in high school.  Your images might not turn out pinterest worthy. Posing is a learned craft.  Especially to do it safely.

I was that first time mom without much of an idea of how to pose my baby.  No one knew.  The whole genre was brand new 11 years ago. Even though I was a professional photographer anyone who has attempted newborn photography can tell you it is much more about the poses than it is about the clicking of the actual image.

So please do yourself a favor and hire for the newborn pictures.  But after that around the first month have fun learning to photograph your baby.  It’s definitely a large part of motherhood.  They will only remember what they relive through your stories and the photographs you take of them.  Here are my best tips for those attempting this at home.  I have two categories.  The first is for picture taking the second will be for posing.

Category One:  Taking the picture.

Tip 1: Open your windows and let in the most amount of light possible.

Tip 2: Face your baby’s face toward the window light.  This means your back will be towards the window (just be careful not to cast a shadow)

Tip 3: Play games!  Babies love anticipation.  By the 10th time they will smile and then giggle as you slowly.  creep.   your.  hand.  up.   to.   them.   TO TICKLE THEM!    You get the idea 🙂

This can work for those grow with me pictures too!

Category Two:  Posing

Tip 1:  Use a blanket either on your bed or on the floor.  This will create less distractions in the background.  The size of a throw blanket will do the trick.

Tip 2: Don’t want to wash the carpet?  Use a swaddle to hide the diaper or better yet.  All of these poses would be super cute in tight fitting jammies.

Tip 3: Use rolled up socks under the blanket to lift their head a little toward you.  You would be amazed at all the things we have under these blankets to create the cozy poses!

Tip 4: Use the nap time that has the best light in the spot you pick.  If you want them asleep.  As they grow get adorable awake shots as they learn to make eye contact!

Tip 5: Around month four Tummy time is much more fun for them if you are on your tummy too interacting with them!  Bring your camera and play peek a boo.  🙂

Easy Tips for How to Photograph Your Baby

One Year Birthday Celebration

First Year Birthday Tulsa Julie Dawkins Photography

First Year Birthday Tulsa Julie Dawkins PhotographyFirst Year Birthday Tulsa Julie Dawkins PhotographyThe First Birthday is such a huge milestone in a baby’s life but maybe more so in the parents.  It is the ultimate celebration of survival through the 12 months from first breath to first steps.  When they put that little babe in your arms and walk out the door of the hospital room you realize “ok, they trust me to keep this baby alive”.  And your next thought might be they forgot the manual of how to do that.

Thank goodness for Google now a days!  How many times in the last 12 months did you google sleep hours or training, Tylenol and Advil rotations, how to supplement, when to start solid foods, is that rash normal, and all the things teething!

Mama!  You did it!  12 months!  One full year!  Your tiny babe is now a tiny tot able to hold up their own head and feed themselves Cheerios for entertainment! They recognize you as their comfort and security.  The journey of parenthood has just begun but no one on earth knows that baby better than you!  Your off to a great start and all the moments that got you here should be celebrated and documented!

Expecting in Tulsa 2019 | Maternity Community

Maternity Community in Tulsa A local community of Mamas to be in the same stage of life hosted by Julie Dawkins Photography

You guys!  I have wanted to do this for so long.  I have created a maternity community in Tulsa for Mamas expecting in 2019!  I so wish I had a go to group when I was expecting my first child in 2008.  I had just moved back to the Tulsa area after having been gone for almost a decade. I had so many questions.

Questions about OBGYNS, hospitals, options.  And, I would have killed for someone to give me advise like make sure to bring your own comfy clothes for postpartum instead of wearing their gown the whole time.  Seriously, you guys, ALL of the pictures with me and my first daughter are in THAT gown.  The one that isn’t completely sewn together all the way around.  The one that looked like a giant tent.

Sometimes you just need advice and a place to go for questions.  Sometimes you just want a friend to say me too!  Sometimes you need to make a new friend in your same stage of life.  This is the dream for this group!  But it will be what you all make it!  There will be all kinds of ideas and opinions just be kind and helpful.  Make a friend.  Message each other for a date to the library for the 0-2 age story time.  All the babies sleep or eat through the story but you Mamas get a chance to connect!

If you know someone in Tulsa who has announced that they are pregnant I hope you will send them this link to join!  https://www.facebook.com/groups/Expecting2019

You were made for this Mama!  I jumped at the chance to photograph this sweet Mama who is a week away from delivery. A week away from her fourth baby…all boys!  If I had one regret it would be not photographing myself while I was pregnant.  My memory is not kind.  My memory recalls the exhaustion and not the beauty and strength of my body and all that it took to nurture those babies!

This sweet Mama mentioned that this will probably be her last and she had never had maternity pictures taken so we fixed that!  Not only is Amanda stunningly beautiful just as she is, I loved that I got a chance to help her remember how gorgeous her body actually is with her belly curve holding a 38 week child within.

Document the First Year | 2 Easy Ways to Photograph Your Baby

Tulsa Baby Pictures Milestone Tummy Time Baby Photographer First Year

Tulsa Baby Pictures Milestone Tummy Time Baby Photographer

I love photographing babies at their developmental milestones.  These are the stages where they have accomplished a big step in their development.  Things like mastering tummy time or sitting independently with no sudden lurches backwards are things that deserve milestone pictures.

But for the week to week or m0nth to month images here are some fun ways to photograph those moments.  First off you want to make them super easy.  Something routine that can help you remember to do it and can make it predictable for both of you as the year progresses.

Here are a few ideas and my professional tips to pull it off.

This idea is super easy.  12 pictures of growth. Put it on your calendar so you will have a reminder to take the picture.  Don’t worry if you miss the actual day just do it when you think about it.

My tips to pull it off:  You will need a partner to pull this off.

Have Daddy lay on his back with his head up against the wall.

Choose a white or solid colored wall close to window light.  Pick a time of day where you can do this consistently so the light is similar.

Have the baby “sit” in the palm of one hand and hold the baby’s head with the other until they are old enough to do it themselves.

Keep outfits really simple.  A white onesie would do the trick or theme it to the closest holiday.

This next one can technically be done by yourself with a self timer but it would be a lot easier to show the “goal” picture to Daddy and have them do their best.  All that needs to be in the frame is the baby.    The goal is to take it from the same distance.  Find a wall to lean against.  Have the “spot” be next to a window with a lot of light (preferably not direct light…the kind you can make shadow puppets with).  Wear a light colored shirt and try to wear it every time or at least one similar. Notice the Mommy’s hands they are cradling him in the same position in each photo.
